I have rearranged my bookshelves on the principle of
things I actually read go where I can reach
and things I inherited can go behind everything in the back corner.

McGuire, Huff, Bujold, Cherryh and Duane are now on the nice visible shelves next to me.
Other stuff got sort of stirred around and I am not especially confident of finding it again later, so this is a work in progress.

But somehow the book stirring process has made a space on the shelves suitable for putting plural books in.
Which basically never happens.
I am puzzled yet pleased.

Today I have done two loads of laundry. First one is all put away even. Second one is in the dryer.

The laundry bags/baskets are still full. They started full and they are still full. That is not how geometry is supposed to work.
The newer bag is the gigantic ikea one and it is full even though previously the smaller one was just kind of overfull a bit. Or apparently a lot.
Expanding laundry.

I have also been listening to more Dalek Universe. I think I would like them better if I wasn't tired. But they are quite good.

It is so weird sometimes to realise how long it has been since the TV canon Big Finish is picking up and running with. I mean they are still doing 4th Doctor adventures. But even these 10th Doctor ones are featuring someone from 16 years ago. Entire human beings got invented and grew up since he started.

About twenty years since Torchwood. Seventeenish since Ianto died.

I saw https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cddnn2rn0v7o Ianto's Shrine is scheduled to come down soon due to the wood and iron under all the pictures and that being all wore out.
I acknowledge that the Shrine existing in the first place is a bit nuts, but it's a cool sort, where we decided a story mattered enough to keep passing it along.
There's a petition https://www.change.org/p/save-ianto-s-shrine but I kind of don't see what else they're going to do about it.
Cool if they could though.

I'd still like to go and see it but since I haven't been more than a half hour walk away from my flat since 2020 that is a bit Maybe I Personally Could Visit The Moon. Only a bit though, it's still there and only taxis and trains away, I'd just have to be a different me to get there.

Like Flux next weekend https://seanharry.com/home/flux/
that looks brilliant and exactly the sort of thing I liked to do when I liked to do things.

My plans for this month instead involve attempting to get my hair cut again. Which involves several challenging parts. But has been achievable goals.

I am a bit frustrated by how small I shrank everything. Tricky to get growing again though.

I shall persevere.

Also, listen more Doctor Who and finish the drying on this laundry.

*sigh*

Look: not to say that I agree with the our Idiot PM or with his maybe-ally (I decidedly don't), but clearly the Europeans have learned nothing from their history. At all.

To say that something is Bad just because it breaks the law is... yeah. There is an Israeli saying on the matter of people who obey laws because they are laws, and I'm sure every Jewish person around here is thinking about the same historical example right now.

If the law is dumb, you change the fucking law. Humans wrote it and humans can change it. It isn't sacred. Breaking the law does not in itself make anything bad, and a hell of a whole lot of evil had been done as a result of that sort of thinking.

But Europeans be Europeans, apparently.

(Re; I'm sure this quote can be found in language other than Hebrew, too.)

Here are some dreams I've had lately!

Dreams from December to March. )

On a final and unrelated note: I forgot to mention the most important part of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage!

At one point, protagonist Swann comes across a little pile of rabbit droppings. The game gives you the opportunity to point this out to Swann's friends with the dialogue option 'Hey! Poop!'

I did not take this option, because I thought Swann's friends might find it offputting. My real-life friends are a different matter. Tem and I have been saying 'Hey! Poop!' to each other at every opportunity ever since.

[ID: shot of my character from the back as she looks into the blasted ruins of the Kiln of the First Flame. She is wearing mismatched red and yellow clothes and a silver helmet, and holding a halberd.]

And it only took 8 months, and a number of hours I will not disclose. Though, to be fair, since I unexpectedly got into the multi-player, a lot of the total hours actually represent me reading a book while waiting to be summoned.

Dark Souls is slow, janky, eccentric, flawed, wilfully obscure about some of its mechanics, and one of the best games I've ever played. I am in love. Ask me anything.

I still have intentions of doing some proper rec posts of all the excellent fic that I read during my initial reading dive into the AO3 tags last spring/summer, but - since apparently that's not happening yet, I may as well start reccing as I go.

These are a couple of longer fics that I marked for later on my initial sweep through the archive and finally remembered to go back and read. One season one genfic, one late-season explicit fic in which I'm sure the main pairing will surprise no one.

I'm worried I lost my kindle when I misplaced my red bag in which everything is. Well, not everything, but perhaps my kindle. Or maybe not. My kindle might be under my bed. If it's not under my bed, I'll have to replace it sooner or later. I'm a bit wary of looking and finding out one way or another.

Yesterday was Alex's birthday!

It was fairly low-key.

We went to the aquarium on Tuesday as an early celebration, which was very fun. (I need to sort through the pictures.)

Last night we got Indian food takeout for dinner, which was delicious.

(Now to figure out what to do for my birthday next week, haha.

Maybe the zoo and more Indian food.)

Today we got our first real snow in... quite a while. 30-some days. This is only the third or fourth time it's snowed at all this season, and this is definitely the most we've gotten.

I hate-hate-hate the cold and snow, and have loved having almost every day remain warm and sunny. However... yes, the lack of moisture is Deeply Concerning, so this is good. I'm hoping that we wind up with more rain this spring, to help stave off the drought.

Vierna is Betrayed

Divining Destiny: Flight for Freedom

Vierna came alert from the dream with a chill on her spine. Things had been going so well ever since she had managed to give Drizzt a chance to live elsewhere.

Her Lord was the only reason she dreamed at all, which meant the dream was a portent that she had to divine the meaning of quickly. With a flicker of her will, she sent her current messenger spider, one of the line from her father's gift to her so long ago, to fetch him to her. While she did that, she cleared her mind to take up the spells of hiding that she had lived under, ever since the Masked God chose her as His priestess.

Zaknafein was waiting when she came up from the prayers, sitting calmly opposite her — and a barrier to anything else that would have dared enter the Matron's chambers.

"Something has shifted, and we are now in danger," Vierna signed to him. "Invite your lover to take those of our people he wishes. You and I, any you trust explicitly, will use the gathering paths to leave this city."

"You are certain?"

Vierna's mouth set in a grim line for a long moment. "Only that the hiding spell is known to me from childhood allowed me to take it, I think. She is seeking His influence in the city now."

"Be at the portal by the time for evening meal; I will have all things in motion," Zak told her firmly.

For better or worse, House Do'Urden in Menzoberranzan would be abandoned to the Spider Queen, but personal survival was prized above all else, for most drow, and Vierna was typical in that regard.

Dinin sat in the safe house of Bregan D'Aerthe with his head in his hands, still mulling over everything. He was grateful to the Weapon Master for making this opportunity appear, but he was at a loss for what would be expected now that he was without a House.

Jarlaxle, leader of the mercenary company, sat beside him, uncovered eye surveying those few men he had chosen to bring into the band. He wasn't very pleased; Vierna Do'Urden had been opening avenues to the cunning man for years now.

"It is done."

"She — they did make it out, yes?" Dinin asked, looking over.

"That actually matters to you," Jarlaxle said, and he looked pleased with that awareness. "Yes, they did. And to spare the rest, their meal was laced with poison, courtesy of my sense of mercy."

Dinin pondered that. When the Matrons of the ruling council moved to end the heresy, they would have tortured the commoners to learn all they could. The loyalty of the fighters would have pushed them to fight even without knowing where their matron was. The changes that Vierna had brought about in the House had made them all stronger, but…

… it was the kind of strength that was not allowed.

"Send me to one of your outposts, with some of my people and any of yours you trust to keep me under your eye." Dinin drew in all of his own cunning, ambition, and pride. "I live, and serving you is damn sure better than being dead or in the clutches of a different House."

"I have just the place for you," Jarlaxle said, smiling. "And I think you will thrive in our network."

Zaknafein inspected the house that had been procured in Rilauven, checking it over for any and all possible traps. When he at last came to Vierna, who was just settling back from prayer, she looked fatigued but content.

"With only ten to support us, it's not the most defensible place, but we can make it work," Zak told her.

"We will have more in time," Vierna promised him. "We still have enough gems to set ourselves on the path of growth."

"Once I am satisfied one of the fighters is able enough to defend in my absence, I will take up the offered contract at their school."

"Mother's manner of salves are unknown here, from all I can learn. That is another avenue of income." Vierna reached for his hands, and he gave them. "Thank you, for having faith in me."

"Nothing else to do when my own daughter proved she was not lost," he said quietly. "Will you be able to scry Drizzt now?"

Vierna sighed, shaking her head. "I had no luck, but then the prayers are still shrouded."

Zak frowned, but if the gods wanted to war on each other, he didn't care; he'd rather they left drow alone. "At least you being so high in favor, even with Him weakened, means you shouldn't be tested too soon."

"So I think, yes."

Vhaeraun sighed melodramatically as Eilistraee finally managed to pull the poisoned chelicerae out of His abdomen.

"You should have made it clear You wished aid long before now," Eilistraee scolded, putting the large pincers into the waiting darkflame to destroy them. "What happened?"

He considered how to answer as Her hands moved back to the wound, bringing healing and soothing the unending agony He had been inflicted with since the attack.

"One of the junior clerics My priestess had sent to learn in Her temple betrayed My priestess by thought. I managed to warn her, just before My realm was swarmed by Her abyssal spiders.

"I believe She'd already glimpsed My influence building." He grimaced with distaste for losing the first real foothold He'd made in that city.

"She will be on guard for reprisals," Eilistraee mused. "You must be careful, My Twin."

"When am I not, My dear Sister?" he asked in mocking tones, before lying back to let Her finish the healing He needed. She let Him rest, considering all of this, and how it might backlash upon Her own people.

"My priestess is safe, with her father, in one of the cities I hold more strongly," He said. "I chose well with her, even if this did not work the way I wished."

"Just don't go becoming enamored of her, Brother. My Nephew is enough trouble."

Vhaeraun laughed, bitterly, but nodded at the warning. He did enjoy such pleasures, but this priestess was too important, in His limited foresight, to risk that with.

After I got so tired yesterday I scheduled today to be Just Resting
but it is still not fun to be tiredness level feelings weeble wobble.

I listened to some more of Big Finish's Dalek Universe. Is okay. I think the ingredients, 10 getting drawn back before the Time War and meeting another Time Lord, are pretty good stuff, but I also think I Am Tired today so Is Okay.

I have been contemplating how to rearrange my bookshelves. There are shelves below bed level that simply never get read, and a lot of authors shelved in weird inaccessible places simply due to alphabetical order. I have forgotten who is down there really. The ideal solution is to move somewhere with enough horizontal space I can get at both sides of the room, or indeed to be a person who doesn't fall out of a single bed so the bed gets thinner, but since neither of those are doable, I contemplate which books to banish below read level.

I think it'll probably be mostly inherited ones. It's not that the classics of science fiction are bad, it's just that I don't think I've read them all even once, and the ones I have read I don't spend much time thinking about. Keeping Huff and Duane and McGuire and Bujold and Cherryh up where I can read them is key, I've reread all of those recently and I still buy their new work. Asimov may just have to deal with the floor height view. But then I feel like that's unfair and I should really reread things I'm sending Below? Just to be sure? But there are so many.

I also moved a bunch of things to make room for the work and that means noticing they exist again, and in some cases wondering why I still have those. But doing anything to not have items is More Work. So at the moment they're all stacked up in unusual places.

I wonder if anywhere still wants VHS tapes.

I'm sorry I'm not very interactive, just, got tired.

With any luck the work with the power tools and testing the fire alarms multiple times a day will be Over and I can sleeps whenever. That'll be nice.
